OCCC president wants community engagement

NEWPORT — New Oregon Coast Community College President Birgitte Ryslinge hit the ground running when she started July 1, tackling the college’s quest for independent accreditation.

Ryslinge, who served as president of Portland Community College’s Sylvania Campus before coming to Newport, spent that first day at a Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities meeting in Seattle “sharing successes” and what the college plans to do to improve.

While that standalone accreditation is a priority for OCCC – it will allow the college to be fully independent with access to more resources – Ryslinge has other big themes she’d like the college to attend to, such as engagement with the community, partnerships with other entities, offering not only higher education but economic development to Lincoln County through resources such as the Small Business Development Center, and providing accessibility to all social groups.
