NEWPORT — Prolonged periods of dry weather kept rainfall totals below average for the third straight month, and well off the usual amount of precipitation the area typically receives in the timeframe.
As a result, a total of 1.89 inches of rain fell in the Newport area last month, roughly three-quarters of an inch below the average of 2.65 inches in June. Figures are courtesy of Hatfield Marine Science Center in South Beach, which tracks rainfall on a daily, monthly and yearly basis.
No measurable rain was recorded in the month until June 12 when 0.35 inches fell in the area. A total of 0.20 inches was posted June 13, followed by a scant 0.01 inches June 14.
