NEWPORT – The Newport Fire Department will have a new chief next week when Phil Paige ends his lengthy career by riding off into the sunset to write and sing some twangy songs.

Assistant Chief Rob Murphy will officially become the department’s interim chief to give City Manager Spencer Nebel a few months to see if Murphy is the right fit for the job.

“Yes, I want the job and told the city manager that as of right now I do,” Murphy said Tuesday. “But three months from now I might change my mind, and that’s one reason this is temporary. Also, this will allow him to see me in action.”
