Last stage of yearlong planting project

NEWPORT — The strain on Katie Ortiz’s face as she pulled a vegetable plant from the container it had been growing in for months was clear, as was the excitement shown by her and about 20 other students.

Last Friday afternoon, second graders from Sam Case Primary School went to the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse garden to plant vegetables such as lettuce and potatoes.

“Think back, rewind in your mind what they looked like the first time we were here and look at them now,” teacher Kim Haddon said, wanting the students to think about the differences.
