NEWPORT — The Newport City Council has chosen Robertson/Sherwood Architects of Eugene to design the Newport Aquatic Center, agreeing Monday to an $886,330 preconstruction contract that will take about a year to complete.

While the new project has a completion deadline of May 2017, architect Carl Sherwood said during the council’s special meeting that by using a “fairly aggressive” schedule, the construction phase of the project could begin next June with the facility opening as early as July 2016.

Voters approved a $7.9 million general obligation bond last year for the new facility, which will be integrated into the adjacent Newport Recreation Center – a 47,000-square-foot building that has served the community since 2001.
