School district settles sex abuse lawsuit for $250K

Modified: Wednesday, Jun 4th, 2014

After four years, the Lincoln County School District has reached a settlement with five families over a sexual abuse lawsuit at Sam Case Primary.

The lawsuit claims that a 6-year-old boy had inappropriately touched other children and exposed himself. Three LCSD staff members were charged with failure to report child abuse and fined.

The settlement totaled $250,000 and will be distributed among the families.

Since the incident, Superintendent Tom Rinearson said the school district has worked with outside agencies to review policies and procedures around reporting, and how to better recognize the "more subtle behaviors" involved with such abuse.

"On a very deep, personal level, I am very sorry that it even happened, but the best part about it being settled is that the family and kids can move on to the next stage of recovery and life," he said.
