Rescuers gird for busy season

DEPOE BAY — Joint-training exercises commenced this week in the world’s smallest harbor, where trouble comes in all forms.

If history is sure as summer follows spring, boats will sink, cars will fly off cliffs, surfers will be swept to sea and beachcombers will be plucked from the sand by sneaker waves.

“It’s our busy season,” observed Josh Williams, chief of the Depoe Bay Fire District, “and it feels like it’s already arrived.”

On Monday, firefighters and members of U.S. Coast Guard Station Depoe Bay embarked on a three-day training mission to ready themselves for the predictable string of marine emergencies that keep both agencies busy in the summer months.
