NEWPORT — A steady stream of racers made their way along the course as they took off from Yaquina Bay State Park bright and early Saturday morning for the Newport Marathon and first ever Half Marathon.

Newport Marathon course record-holder Sean Sundwall was ahead of the pack as he passed under the Yaquina Bay Bridge, and on toward the Bayfront and Yaquina Bay Road. Fellow racers followed a few miles behind him.

Sundwall was able to keep that lead through the duration of his 26.2-mile race, and crossed the finish line as this year’s marathon winner in a time of 2:32.01.

While he didn’t beat his record-setting time from the 2008 race of 2:22.47 in this weekend’s marathon, he blew through the course.

The marathoner said he wasn’t trying to set any records this year.
