NEWPORT — Rogue Ales co-founder Jack Joyce, whose commitment to innovation and creativity sparked a craft brewing revolution, died Tuesday. He was 71.

Joyce and some friends established Rogue along Lithia Creek in Ashland in 1988. But it wasn’t long before it became clear the brewing operation needed to grow, so Joyce set out to find the perfect place.

That ended up being Newport. Joyce, a former construction litigation attorney and marketing executive with Nike Inc., knew the place well having had a cabin in Nye Beach.

“Right there on 416 High St.,” said Joyce in an interview last fall with the Newport News-Times ahead of the brewery’s 25th anniversary celebration in late October.
