A fleet sails to remember

A crowd of about 700 people, clustered in the harbor and lining the Highway 101 bridge for a bird’s-eye view, attended the 69th annual Fleet of Flowers in Depoe Bay on Monday. -- Jim Carroll, above (foreground), of Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 53, sailed aboard a USCG 47-foot motor lifeboat to help the crew drop cedar boughs and wreaths into the sea Monday during the annual Depoe Bay Fleet of Flowers. DEPOE BAY — A cloudless sky, adept organization and a federal budget deal helped propel the 69th annual Fleet of Flowers to a tearful conclusion Monday.

Wiping away the salt on her cheeks, Chrissie Hansen slipped a bouquet of flowers over the gunwale of the Enterprise, one of 20 vessels that formed a giant circle a mile out to sea.
