Coast Guard saves fisherman 15 miles off Newport

NEWPORT A fast-acting U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew safely plucked a fisherman out of the ocean Sunday morning after his boat sank about 15 miles off the coast of Newport.

The incident started about 8:20 a.m. when Shorty Apperson, the master of the 28-foot fishing vessel Rip Rider, reported via VHF-FM radio his boat was taking on water.
