Catching rainwater to Plant A Row

Josh Lambert, a county Soil and Water Conservation District employee, explains the rainwater catchment system he helped install recently at the First Presbyterian Church in Newport. The water will be used to grow crops at the churchís community garden, which helps provide fresh vegetables for clients of the Newport Food Pantry.

NEWPORT ó The rainwater catchment system thatís being installed on First Presbyterian Church property may be a drop in the bucket in terms of water conservation in Newport, but itís a step in the right direction and for a good cause.

Two, 5,000-gallon plastic cisterns were delivered recently with the goal of eventually having water flow from the churchís roof downspouts into the large tanks and then pumped through underground pipes to the Plant A Row on 12th Street garden.
