Phony gift card case ends with guilty pleas

NEWPORT — State prosecutors secured guilty pleas Monday in the case of a South Dakota man who attempted to bilk retailers in Lincoln City and Newport out of merchandise with bogus gift cards.

Donavan R. Stief, 27, entered pleas to felony charges of aggravated identity theft and possession of methamphetamine during a hearing in Lincoln County Circuit Court before Judge Thomas Branford.

He also pleaded guilty to five misdemeanor counts of fraudulent use of a credit card. In exchange for the guilty pleas, the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office moved to dismiss 25 other charges associated with the crimes.
