The Newport Fire Department responded shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday to the Little Creek Apartments on NE 36th Street. The original report was that an apartment was on fire and flames were showing. The first firefighters on the scene found heavy smoke and blackened windows in a second story apartment.
The initial response was to make sure the building was evacuated. Firefighters then did a complete search of the apartment, located a fire in the kitchen, and extinguished it. The residents had already left for work, according to a statement by the fire department, but a cat found in the apartment had been overcome by smoke. The cat was resuscitated with oxygen and transported to a local veterinary clinic, where it was said to be doing well. For the complete article see the 03-28-2014 issue.
