NEWPORT — The Newport City Council will ask City Attorney Rob Connell to develop an ordinance for a one-year moratorium until May 1, 2015, that would allow the city to hold off on granting business licenses to medical marijuana dispensaries in the city.
A bill that would give Oregon cities the legal authority to pass such moratoriums is awaiting Gov. John Kitzhaber’s signature. City Manager Spencer Nebel said two individuals have applied for a dispensary business license “and we’ve have had other inquiries.”
Nebel said the council wants to make sure that the city is dealing with the “police matter” in an appropriate fashion.
