Mistrial declared in Hiatt trial; jury unable to reach verdict

Modified: Wednesday, Jan 29th, 2014

Scott Van Hiatt

NEWPORT A mistrial was declared this morning in the trial of a motorist accused of hitting and killing a soccer fan, who was walking his way from Seattle to Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, on Highway 101 in Lincoln City last spring.

The six-man, six-woman jury was unable to reach a verdict in the case of Scott Van Hiatt, who stood accused of criminally negligent homicide in the death of Richard Swanson.

The jury spent about eight hours deliberating over the course of two days at Lincoln County Circuit Court. Judge Sheryl Bachart declared a mistrial after the jury informed her there was no chance a verdict would be reached.
