Steven Martin, of Lincoln Beach, took a recent afternoon bike ride on Salishan Spit, and when he reached the north end of the spit, he discovered a blue heron standing very still in the shallow water. With camera in hand, Martin quietly approached the large bird, hoping to catch a photo before it flew away. He had taken a few shots when the heron suddenly snatched a lamprey eel out of Siletz Bay. Martin, who was in the right place at the right time, said it was probably a once in a lifetime photo.
