Part of beached tsunami dock erected on Newport Bayfront

Efforts by Bob Ward and several other Newport residents and businesses led to a corner of the Japanese dock that washed up on Agate Beach in the summer of 2012 being installed as a tsunami educational project in front of the Oregon Undersea Gardens on the Bayfront. Ward holds a stainless steel replica (close-up below) of a plaque that identified the dock before it was ripped from its moorings at the Port of Misawa by the March 2011 storm along Japan’s east coast.


NEWPORT – Thanks to the efforts of a group of local citizens, an 8-ton corner of a fishing dock torn from its moorings during the tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011 has found a permanent home in Newport.
