Margaret Elizabeth Nute Safley Simmonds
Margaret passed peacefully in her sleep on October 1, 2013, at the age of 98. She was born in Park Rapids, Minnesota, December 22, 1914, to Frank & Lenora Nute. The Nute family migrated to Florence, Oregon in late 20s. There she met and married Ben Safley, a native of Florence. They had two daughters, then moved to Newport in 1943 where their son Ben was born. Her husband was the skipper of the Dare II, a drag boat out of Yaquina Bay for many years.

Margaret was one of the founders of the “Wives of the Fisherman” club in Newport and an active member of the Rebecca’s, Eastern Star, Amaranth and St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Newport.

Margaret was preceded in death by husband: Ben Safley in 1977; her second husband: Marshall Simmonds of Newport in 1992; grandson: Duane Gross; two sisters; Isabelle, Josephine; and brother: Robert.

Margaret was blessed with a large and loving family, daughters: Lenora and husband Wally Gross of Hillsboro, Oregon, Betty Lou and husband Don Lukins, of Portland, OR; son: Ben Safley and Diana Hawkins of Show Low, AZ. Grandchildren: John Nye, Diana Jensen, Valorie Lukins, Frank Lukins, Bob and Jeff Safley; nine great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter: Audrey, of Gold Bar, Washington, who was very proud to share a dimple with her great-great grandmother. She also had three nephews who she was very proud of: Frank Johnson, Dick Wagoner and Ralph Nute.

A private celebration of life was held last week.
