High-speed fiber optic cable is supposed to make everyone’s life easier, though workers from CoastCom, a Newport-based telecom company, might dispute the notion after losing track last week of an innovative but tricky bore that drills horizontally beneath the ground. The device was located and underground work will continue for at least two weeks as the fiber optic line, made of hair-thin wires capable of blistering, 10-20 megabyte speeds, is delivered to city hall, the Kids Zone after-school facility and local cable and telephone providers. A CoastCom official predicted “quantum improvements” for the area’s Internet users. Above, Luis Flores digs through 12 inches of pavement and earth while co-workers Tom Black and Chad Stevenson, center, await the results.
