Sniffing out crime

Newport K-9 Officer Keith Garrett and his police dog, Eyan, were a hit with the public at the police department’s After Hours Chamber of Commerce event held at city hall last week. Eyan is a 6-year-old German Shepherd from the Czech Republic that the department received in 2008 after a $70,000 community fundraising effort.  Eyan and Garrett are certified as a narcotics team. If he could talk, Eyan would tell you, “You can hide it, but I will find it.” Eyan lives with Garrett when the pair are off duty. Police dogs can work up to about age 10. “Once he gets to the age, we are going to retire him. I’ll purchase him from the department for a dollar, and he’ll be a stay-at-home dog,” Garrett said.
