State revises wave energy rules

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission last week granted New Jersey-based Ocean Power Technologies a one-year extension to deploy its first wave energy buoy, similar to the one shown above. In filing an extension request, the company said it had run into technical and financial difficulties and didn’t anticipate completing the 10-buoy project for several years. Oregon lawmakers also recently passed legislation to ensure wave energy developers have the financial means to remove projects from state waters. (File photo)


NEWPORT – As the only federally licensed wave energy project in Oregon flounders, state lawmakers recently passed two bills that reaffirm stakeholders say in territorial sea matters and toughens financial rules for offshore energy products.
