USCG’s Beth Slade: an officer and a surfman

DEPOE BAY — The U.S. Coast Guard’s only active female surfman was commissioned Monday as an officer during a sunlit ceremony that drew the region’s top brass to the world’s smallest navigable harbor and the fastidious portico of a 30-member station that patrols its coastal waters.
