“We want children to learn that food doesn’t just come out of packages,” said Oregon Coast Community College student Rachelle Gentry. Gentry, along with classmates Amber Nickerson, Kathy Crosby, and Nicki and Cindy (“The Ladybugs”), has taken on the enviable task of guiding youngsters through the joys of gardening at the Neighbors For Kids (NFK) Community Garden in Depoe Bay.

The Ladybugs are members of an OCCC spring term class designed to develop an array of skills, including leadership, problem solving, and small group interaction. The students practice their skills through a community project, and The Ladybugs chose to work with Neighbors For Kids youth on their community garden.

“We went to Neighbors For Kids and asked Toby (Winn, executive director) what we could help on, and he said the biggest need for help was the community garden. That’s when we became The Ladybugs,” said spokesperson Kathy Crosby.
