NEWPORT — Eight years old might seem a bit young to take on the weighty challenge of finding a cure for cancer, but don’t tell that to Piper Berkowitz.

The precocious youngster has already helped raise more than $2,200 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation by pledging to publicly let stylists from Earthbound Beauty shave her golden locks on May 19 at Nana’s Irish Pub in Nye Beach.

“We’re going to be shaving our heads for kids who have cancer so scientists and hospitals can do research to cure cancer,” Piper said.

She has inspired her mom, Hallie, her Oregon Connections Academy teacher, friends, and Commander Rick Brennan, captain of the NOAA Ship Rainer and some crewmembers to join her. The Rainer is currently in Alaska, but Brennan and his shipmates will check in by Internet on the day of the big event.
