The Philosophical Forum sponsored by the Friends of the Yachats Commons meets from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 19, in Room 3 of the Yachats Commons.
The topic, “Pacifism and the Use of Force,” will focus mainly, but not exclusively on the following questions: 1) Is pacifism always the correct response regardless of situation, or is the use of violent, even lethal, force a just response in certain situations? 2) If violent, even lethal, force is a just response, does it follow that pacifism is wrong when confronted with the same situation? 3) Is one of the unalienable rights guaranteed by the Declaration of Independence the right to use violent, even lethal, force to preserve the life or natural rights of oneself and threatened others?
