NEWPORT—After months of construction, the Walgreens building at the corner of Highway 20 and Highway 101 is nearing completion and should open later this summer.

“It’s getting pretty close,” said developer Bret Fox of Salt Lake City based Thomas Fox Properties. “We’ll be done toward the end of this month or the first week of June. Walgreens will take possession mid-June and probably open up between July 15 and the end of July.”

The exterior of the art deco themed building is mostly complete along with the parking lot and landscaping. Construction crews are finishing exterior work in preparation to handing the building over to Walgreens.

Despite a delay caused by the discovery of an underground oil tank at the former car lot and the associated environmental hoops, Fox said the project is only two weeks behind schedule.

“That’s not to bad for working through the rain and everything else,” he said.
