Newport School of Dance: a look back

Forty years ago, Sian Zander began Newport School of Dance in the old Agate Beach Community Hall. The search for wooden floors led to the council chambers in the old city hall building (now Pig 'n Pancake), and then to the double-story dance hall above what is now Mazatlan Restaurant.

Zander began her first dance company with the support of Newport High School. It was named "Lifters, Inc." by the boys who partnered Zander's ballet students. A highlight of that time was performing in Eugene at half-time for a Newport Cubs game. Another was performing in "A Soldier's Tale" with the newly created Eugene Ballet Company.
