The Newport Performing Arts Center was filled with excitement on April 29 when second graders from around Lincoln County were treated to a concert that was, for many, the first time hearing a live symphony orchestra.

The significance of the event was not lost on the conductor for the Salem Youth Symphony’s Philharmonia Orchestra (SYSPO), Jon Harris-Clippinger, who found many lively ways to connect the children with the music, the musicians and their instruments. The rest of the program featured pieces by Brahms, Dvorak, Stravinsky and others, and the program was repeated in a free evening concert for the public.
