Alsea River cleaner after weekend effort

Posted: Friday, May 10th, 2013

Cory Vertner recovered this piece of steel cable below the Ermie Walters boat launch Saturday.

WALDPORT – Volunteers removed several hundred pounds of trash from Alsea tidewater shores and several miles of riverbank last weekend.

“We had good weather and a good turnout. I’m pleased,” said Alsea Sportman’s Association president Marc Davis.

The Sportsman’s Association and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife teamed up on the first cleanup of the Alsea River along with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Davis said six or seven boats showed up Friday for a sweep of the tidewater area, collecting 650 pounds of garbage.

On Saturday, several drift boats and an inflatable pontoon boat scoured the banks between the River Edge campground and Hellion boat takeout. Although the boats up river didn’t find as much trash as in tidewater, volunteers recovered a significant amount of material, including steel logging cable, scrap metal, plastic sheeting and drink containers.
