Forest service fights fire from local hotel

NEWPORT The noisy room fell silent as the latest news struck like a lightning bolt in a tinderbox: fueled by dry winds, a raging inferno that stretched from Detroit to Cottage Grove pressed in on both sides of a remote campground, threatening to trap a dozen Boy Scouts in a merciless firestorm.
