Brad Taylor, the new owner of Cellular 101 retail stores in Newport and Lincoln City, hopes to make a living from the growing popularity of prepaid cell phones.

The move toward month-to-month cell phone service allows users to go mobile without being on a lengthy contract or, in some instances, have their credit checked by a phone purveyor.

“Because of the economy,” he said, “people who depend on cell phones but don’t want to be locked into an expensive contract and termination fees are buying month-to-month prepaid service. Also, you don’t get charged for your minutes.”

Taylor’s stores offer a variety of phones and prepaid services, including from providers such as Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, H20 Wireless and PagePlus Verizon.

Cellular 101 sells several 4G phones, including the Galaxy S2 ($329) and the LG Venice ($199). If the customer’s needs are modest, Taylor also offers the Samsung Factor – one of the smallest phones on the market – for $35.
