Perhaps Eddyville should be renamed “Nowheresville” or “Slowdownsville” since it’s memorable for many Highway 20 travelers only as an irksome crook in the road located halfway between Newport and Corvallis.

But don’t tell that to the students, teachers and administrators of Eddyville Charter School, especially the 17 members of the remarkable Class of 2013. While all of them will soon be leaving the small community behind, their positive experiences at the school have played a major role in propelling them forward scholastically.

All have received either scholarships or grants to attend colleges or trade schools, including nine who have been admitted to four-year institutions such as Oregon State, University of Oregon and Gonzaga Univversity. They have received aid to attend community colleges or trade schools.

“This is just a spectacular group of students,” said Sandi LaRoche, the school’s dean of students. “The difference with this group is that each of them knows exactly what’s expected of them and are driven to succeed.”
