It’s not surprising that Carl Johnson sounds a little bemused when relating the whirlwind experience of opening Carl’s Coffee in Nye Beach just over two months ago.

It goes like this: The 27-year-old’s father, Bruce Johnson, held a lease for a vacant space in a Nye Beach building after the previous occupant – a wine shop/art gallery – shuttered in August. Conversations with his son and a friend who knew Rachelle Peterson and Amanda Houchens, young women with extensive experience in restaurant and barista work, respectively, led to an extensive, four-month renovation and an opening on Feb. 1.

“I was going to take business management classes at Portland Community College when my dad (a retired HP engineer living in Newport) said that rather than take on some school loans I should come to Newport and learn first-hand,” Carl said. “We came up with having a specialty coffee shop, and here we are.”

Considering it is Johnson’s first foray into running a small business, he’s fortunate to have found Peterson and Houchens, both of whom have worked and managed in the hospitality business here and elsewhere in Oregon.
