Equipped with what one officer described as “hyper-light bars,” two new Ford Explorers were added recently to the armada of the Lincoln City Police Department at a cost of $82,000, including $30,000 to equip the oversized prowlers with radios, prisoner restraints and other gear. Purchased from Gresham Ford following a state bid, the four-door, all-drive utility “Police Interceptors” have replaced two Ford Crown Victoria squad cars, a model once popular for police work that has been discontinued by Ford. Lincoln City fleet mechanic Willis Degenstein said larger door openings, better vision and more cargo room made the Explorer a favorite over the smaller, cheaper Ford Taurus.
