Volunteers led by the Newport Chapter of Surfrider Foundation helped clean the beach at Yaquina Head. Here they work to remove debris and were able to remove about one-third of the rope from the site. Organizers hope to hold another cleanup event soon. (Courtesy photo)

On Saturday, Feb. 9, under the leadership of Newport Chapter of Surfrider Foundation beach cleanup coordinator Peter Snell, and partners from Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and Bureau of Land Management, a total of 29 volunteers helped haul out more than 1,000 pounds of crab gear at Yaquina Head.

The bulk of the debris came from the fishing vessel Chevelle, which struck the north jetty of Yaquina Bay and sank in March 2012.
