School evacuation

Newport High School students had to evacuate the gymnasium Thursday afternoon during the Mr. NHS pageant after loud popping noises were heard coming from the west side bleachers. Rich Belloni, Lincoln County School District director of facilities, said maintenance staff will check out the bleachers for structural integrity and bring in a repair company if necessary. Belloni said he didn’t know if the bleachers would be available for Tuesday night’s home basketball game. If not, spectators will have to share the bleachers on the east side of the gym. “That may not make a lot of people happy, but we’re going to err on the side of caution,” he said.
