Lincoln Pops brings Big Band sound

Posted: Friday, Feb 8th, 2013

“Saturday Night with the Lincoln Pops Big Band” is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Newport Performing Arts Center.

The Lincoln Pops Big Band, led by John Bringetto, has evolved into one of the finest big bands in Oregon and is dedicated to preserving and passing along the heritage of the big band era. Members include current and retired professional musicians, band directors, former high school and college players, and several talented local high school students. With five saxophones, five trumpets, four trombones, piano, guitar, bass, drums, congas, vibraphone and three vocalists, the Lincoln Pops puts on a dynamic show.

On Feb. 16, the band will perform some tunes they do not play at their dance performances. They will play hard-driving jazz, ballads, Latin and blues and even a polka (with accordion solo). Selections include “My Funny Valentine,” “Mr. Lucky,” “Besame Mucho,” and “Sing, Sing, Sing.” They will also play some arrangements by their bass trombone player, Dave Robertson.
