Success on the Fly: Goals

Posted: Tuesday, Jan 22nd, 2013

Chris Waugh

The conventional goal setting process has always stymied me.

From my perspective, it’s not about where you land your hang glider, it’s about the quality of your flight. That holds true for life.

The word, goal, comes from Middle English “gol” meaning boundary or limit, and relates to Old English “gælan” which means to hinder or impede.

Well, there’s a problem. It seems like being thwarted is built right into the meaning.

The ‘boundary’ part of the meaning tells me it’s about the destination. This is probably the reason a goal is to be so specific and time oriented. It’s an event, like a snap shot. It happens in a moment.

But what about the moving picture? The rest of the story? I don’t think setting five goals - five moments of achievement - is what life is all about.

Instead of focusing on specific goals, focus on why you’re going where you’re going. Review your missions and values, and vision of what could be. Do it personally, do it with your family, and by all means (and most financially profitable) do it at work.

Here’s a different way to think about your goals:

• Don’t set yourself up for failure by being too restrictive or specific.

• Instead of thinking success/failure, think more-desirable/less-desirable.

• Think of the process (not the result) as important, such as eating well.

• Goals are moving targets that may change as you approach them.

• You may change your priorities as you get closer to your goals.

Keep your mission in mind and head for your goals, but stay flexible. You’ll want to take advantage of opportunities.
