Success on the Fly: Focus

Posted: Thursday, Jan 17th, 2013

Chris Waugh

My friend, M, started hang gliding when I did. We bought our first gliders together. We spent the summer flying on the sand dune at Cape Kiwanda. One day, she flew into the lone driftwood log on the beach. At first, the crash was humorous - she landed sitting on the log.

But she didn’t get up. Growing concerned, I set down my glider and ran to her. She was wincing in pain, and said she had broken her leg. I could see the evidence of a compound fracture. We learned later she had broken her back, both legs, and one ankle.

Once, while visiting her in the hospital, I asked about how she flew into that isolated log. She told me that she kept looking at it, and hoping she wouldn’t crash into it. Now, too late, she knew that her focus on the log caused her to fly straight into it.

Tough lesson about focus. M never did get back into hang gliding. She took up scuba diving.

Your focus is manifest in your successes and failures in life. It’s like remembering that if you hit ice, focus and steer in the direction you intend to go rather than in the direction of the skid. Take a little time this week to monitor your focus. Then you’ll know how to respond appropriately, so that you don’t simply react.

What are you thinking about? To what are you paying attention? Notice your focus - or keep a diary:

• What five things do you focus on most during the day?

• Do your focus areas balance with the important aspects of your life?

• Are you Pollyanna-positive about certain focal points?

• What negative focus do you repeat frequently? What does that tell you?

• Does your focus contribute to your happiness, success and well being?

Take the opportunity to notice your focus. Consider making adjustments, so that it better serves you.
