Bill Luce takes the stage

Friends and fans fete playwright’s work at PAC

Friends, family and fans of playwright William Luce turned out in force at the Newport Performing Arts Center during a gale-force storm last month for a rare occasion to quiz the renowned author of brainy Broadway plays and popular TV movies about the secrets and techniques of his remarkable career.

A Portland native who has lived in Depoe Bay for the last 20 years, Luce fielded questions from an audience of about 130 people in the lobby before he and the crowd retired for an exclusive HD screening of “Barrymore,” starring Christopher Plummer in a 2010 reprise of the William Luce play that earned Plummer a Tony Award in 1997. During the Q&A, Luce recalled his important influences, including a Grant High School English teacher who directed his talent into writing contests, and the providential breaks that have marked his long-running career.
