Willis Darrel Sims, 90 of Scio, Ore., died Dec. 24, 2012.

He was born Sept. 29, 1922 to Errol and Hazel (Tindall) Sims on his family homestead in Shelburn, Ore. Darrel was raised in Scio and later moved to Willamina, where he graduated from high school. In March 1947, he married Theresa Bowen in Salem, Ore.

Darrel served with the U.S. Marine Corps, attaining the rank of major. During World War II, he flew as a Corsair fighter pilot, returning to the service during the Korean conflict, where he flew other aircraft including helicopters. He remained in the USMC reserves for many years following his active duty.

After his military service, Darrel became involved in the automotive industry as a salesman and then sales manager for Loder Brothers in Salem, and later as a partner at Harris-Tunison Motors in Albany. In 1967, he purchased the Ford dealership in Newport, Ore., and was a partner in first Sims-Allen Ford and later Sims-Walker Ford in Newport.

He was very active in the community, including serving as the president of both the Newport Chamber of Commerce and the Newport High School Booster Club. Darrel enjoyed an active lifestyle, which included pheasant hunting and fishing. An avid RV enthusiast, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, Terry.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa; children, Kathy (Greg) Sumners of Hawaii, Darlene (Myron) Misiaszek of Newport, Joyce (Craig) Ausmus of Oregon City, and Gayle (Max) Sims of Scio; sister-in-law, Bernice McClellan of Albany; grandchildren, Matthew and Lucas Breazeal; and two great-grandchildren.

A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and sent in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 Washington St. SW, Albany, OR 97321. An online memorial book is at www.fisherfuneralhome.com.
