Winter double jeopardy for brown pelicans

An injured California brown pelican limps along Bay Boulevard in Newport Thursday, Dec. 27. Volunteers trying to locate and capture this bird have been unsuccessful, an Oregon Coast Aquarium staff member said Saturday. The aquarium has taken in a couple of injured pelicans this winter. Weather and human handouts endanger birds

Scientists donít know why over the last several winters a small population of brown pelicans has stayed on the central and north Oregon coast instead of migrating to southern California.
