2013 through the eyes of photographer JoHanna Wienert

Of all the calendars that defied Mayan predictions of the end of time on Dec. 21, the official News-Times 2013 calendar may be the best reminder of why it's good to be alive at the Oregon coast.

The dazzling, 32-page calendar captures Lincoln County at breathtaking moments when elements collide: a sudden downpour from a blue sky at Agate Beach, the sun's struggle to pierce morning fog on lonely Bay Road in Toledo and a stalwart lighthouse at Yaquina Head poised against a brewing storm. Those photos are among the 15 full-page images bagged by award-winning Newport photographer JoHanna Wienert for the third annual installment of the popular News-Times calendar.

Wienert, a single mother of three sons who works as a graphic designer for the newspaper, has been a photographer since she was given a box camera by her father at the tender age of seven.
