Crabbers getting underway

Pre-soak begins today, harvest starts Dec. 31

There’s been a month of delay, but the timing couldn’t be better as the West Coast crab season finally gets underway today (Friday).

As usual, good news for Oregon and Newport crab fishermen going into the season opener revolves around safety and price:

• Weather forecasters are calling for relatively calm seas and dry weather for the next 10 days;

• After several rounds of negotiations, representatives for the processors and fishermen have settled on a wholesale price of $2.30 per pound.
