Farmers’ market thrives inside

Like busy hands in Santa’s workshop, talented artists and skilled crafters labored in the exhibit hall of the Lincoln County Fairgrounds Saturday to fill Christmas orders during the busiest day of the indoor season yet for the Farmers’ Market.

Protected from the wind and rain, enthusiastic shoppers browsed about 50 booths for gift items unavailable at the malls or big box outlets: a Klingit Indian-style paddle, hand-carved from Alaska yellow cedar; seductive earrings of agates and mussel shells wrapped in silver wire; kiln-fired pottery from Toledo; kitchen cutting boards made in a master carpenter’s home shop; and a plump, frozen duck for the Christmas table.

“There’s just a lot of lovely stuff there,” said Glory Truax of Newport, clutching a colorful Christmas centerpiece from one of the holiday crafts tables. “I’ll be back before Christmas.”
