A power surge and subsequent outage caused by winds reaching 75 miles per hour disabled computers and shut down business activity on a five-block stretch of Highway 101 in Newport at about 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19. Fifty customers at Burger King were turned away during the outage, according to fry-line supervisor Kyle Grobe. At Ron’s Oil Co., a busy Union 76 gas station located at 843 NW Coast Highway, the fuel islands remained closed after a surge “fried” the central computer. Manager Rene Corona said attendants, including Jonathon Young, eyeing an empty nozzle in the above photo, turned away motorists throughout the afternoon. “This gas station fills the county,” he said. “We go through up to 5,000 gallons every eight hours, so this is really a disaster.”
