Waldport Library sends two teams to Lego League Tournament

Posted: Wednesday, Dec 19th, 2012

Waldport’s two First Lego League teams consist of youths ranging in age from nine to 14, largely from south Lincoln County. The “Musotic Owls” chose “The Remember Aid” as their Senior Solution Presentation. Waldport’s first-year team is the “Anaklusmos aka Riptides.” Their team project is a Grocery Positioning System-GPS. The Oregon Robotics Tournament & Outreach Program known as ORTOP helps bring the First Lego League Qualifying Tournament to Oregon. This year’s qualifying tournaments were held in Albany, at the Memorial Middle School on Dec. 1; and in McMinnville, on Dec. 2, at the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum. The Waldport Public Library had teams attend this tournament. This year’s theme was “Senior Solutions.”

Each team has three areas that they must present: the Senior Solutions Project/Presentation, the FLL Core Values, and the Lego Robot Missions. The Core Values include activities around working as a team and being friendly, cooperative, supportive, and still competitive with other teams. These activities include team building games, choosing a name and project, designing a T-shirt, consulting professionals in this year’s area of interest: seniors and aging and computer science. To reinforce their presentation skills, both teams met on Nov. 29 to present at the Waldport Library for the staff, team members, and the Friends of the Waldport Library.  The Friends of the Waldport Library is one of the sponsors of both teams, helping them with the funding for their shirts.
