A successful fundraising campaign and community support sent a group of Waldport High School students to Charleston, S.C. for the American Canoe Association’s (ACA) national conference this month, exposing students to contacts in the industry and a range of new experiences.
Madeline Parnell, Robert Ewart and Amy Mullen, with chaperones Melissa Steinman and Maggie Rivers, attended the ACA conference Nov. 2-4. The teens are part of a group that runs the Waldport High School Kayak Shack, located on Port St. in Waldport, giving guided tours and kayak lessons throughout the summer season. Steinman is the advisor for the Kayak Shack program, and Rivers is the manager of the Port of Alsea.
