Each month at Siletz Valley School, the K-8 charter school sponsored by the Lincoln County School District, teachers nominate two students from each classroom for students of the month. Staff members rate the nominees on character, leadership, citizenship, academics, responsibility and respect.
Each month, students are honored in an assembly where they receive a certificate, a handshake from the principal and a gift certificate for free ice cream at Little Chief Restaurant in Siletz. The finale in the assembly is a Native American Friendship Circle Dance - or round dance. Two circles of individuals stand facing each other, each stepping to the left. With every step, students shake the hand of the person across from them and say “good morning.” Students also drum and sing during the dance.
“We wanted to recognize the hard work and respectful behavior that we have the privilege to see everyday,” said seventh grade teacher Emily McMillin. “It is a positive reinforcement and a reminder to other students that making the right choices everyday pays off.”
